Killing a lead

So I just watched Close to Home. They have killed off one of the lead prosecutors Maureen. I think that the killing off of lead characters is now becoming a must at the end of the season. I for one am over it. It started for me with NCIS and the killing of Kate. Which was a totally shocking way to end the episode. Kate was dead. Shot in the head, no coming back from that. I know that there were others that season but that for me was the start of it. The other ones that come to mind are the killing of Lem off of The Shield, the killing of Ramano on ER, the killing of Melinda's best friend on Ghost Whisperer...the list goes on. So far this season along with Maureen, we have Lily on Cold Case (although that is up in the air and I am sure that she will make it back)

The thing is that yes I will come back next season to see what is going to happen. When you lose a main character you lose some of what makes that show great. I like Ziva as a replacement on NCIS but I do miss the chemistry between Kate and Tony. The only show that I know that seems to be impervious to losing character and continuing to have great chemistry all around is Law and Order. All though I will admit that some seasons are better then others.

I think that we as a viewing audience are getting less upset about the killing of a main character and that now to have a great season finale a main character can die. For me this just not hold true, there are other ways to make great TV and if it means losing some of what I loved about a show to begin with then I can do without it.
