So the other day I could not find my shoe. In my house this is a common occurrence, I have two small children that love to wear my shoes. The thing is on this day I was late and I did not have time to search for it. I decided that I would go barefoot. My husband and children looked at me like I had lost my mind. Maybe I had.
I wonder when I decided that I could not leave my house without shoes on. I wonder when I decided that I was too old to enjoy the dirt. There was something very freeing about driving my car barefoot (which I am not sure but I think maybe illegal in this state). There comes a point and time in your life where you grow up. I am not sure that growing up though means that you have to stop enjoying something as simple as digging your toes into the mud. I think that not wearing shoes freed me a little bit.
The next day I took my one year old outside in the yard and let him run around without his shoes on. At first there was confusion. He really did not want to be on the grass, you could tell that he thought that it felt weird. Once he got use to it you could see him curling his toes into it. I remember that feeling, those first days of summer and finally shedding the winter clothes. The joy of having my feet free and running around the yard barefoot. I guess I just want to know when I grew out of that.
I think that from now on I am going to take my shoes off a little more often. I am going to curl my toes into the grass. I don't believe that my age really has anything to do with it. I think that as we get older we forget those small sweet things that we looked forward to as children. What if all adults took a moment to dig their toes in the dirt? Wouldn't the world just be a slightly happier place?
